Hello, and welcome to another edition of ‘Live-Blogging Shish on Horse Racing’. Tonight, it is Los Alamitos Race Course’s Late Pick 3 featuring the Trials of the 2023 Brad McKenzie Winter Championship.

There are two races for the BWWC Trials. The first race will feature #2 Empressum. Empressum (2-5) is a 5-year-old gelding, who has won two of the last three races at Los Alamitos. He will be rivaled by Scoops Dynasty and London Toby.

In the second trial, the favorite of this race is #3 Apolitical Pence. Apolitical Pence (1-5) finished 3rd in the Champion of Champions (Empressum). AP will be chased by #4 Stuck in Probate and #6 Letty Cartel.

Here are the races in the Late Pick 3 of tonight’s card:​

Race 8, 300 yards, Dirt, QuarterHorse, 6 horses, $13.7K:
The first race is quarter horse sprint. This one features a battle of 4-year-olds. #1 Capo De Story is the 12-1 long shot. While #6 Look Up is the favorite at 8-5.

20 MTP: Look Up opens up as the 4/5 favorite.
15 MTP: LU is an even-odd favorite.
10 MTP: #1 Capo De Story is a 20-1 long shot.
5 MTP: #4 Favorite Habit is near his morning line of 7/2. He is at 5-2.
2 MTP: LU is a 4-5 favorite. While CDS is a 20-1 long shot.

Post: #3 More Than Chance leaves without a jockey. MTC is a late scratch. #1 is off to a quick start.

#1 Capo De Story wins this race as a 13-1 long shot. She will earn wagers $28.40. $1 Exacta (1-6) paying out $49.00. $1 Trifecta (1-6-4) paying out $107.50. And $0.10 Superfecta (1-6-4-5) paying out $18.68. 

Race 9 (2023 Brad McKenzie Winter Championship Trial) 400 yards, Dirt, QuarterHorse, 6 horses, $10K:

The penultimate race is the first of the BMWC Trials. As mentioned, #2 Empressum is the favorite at 2-5. There are 3 long shots in this trial at 20-1. Those long shots are #1 Jess Being a Friend, #3 Amadeus MV, and #6 Dasha Good Reason. No show wagering.

20 MTP: #2 Empressum opens up as a 1-9 favorite.
15 MTP: #3 Amadeus MV is a 40-1 long shot.
10 MTP: #1 Jess Being a Friend is at 25-1.
5 MTP: #5 London Tony is now at 8-1.
2 MTP: Empressum is the 1-9 favorite. While AMV is a 40-1 long shot.

Post: #1 is off to an early lead.

A Photo Finish for the Win. Empressum held on by a nose. He had a 1-5 odds. He will earn his wagers $2.40. $1 Exacta (2-4) paying out $2.40. $1 Trifecta (2-4-5) paying out $4.50. $0.10 Superfecta (2-4-5-6) paying out $1.10. 

​Race 10 (2023 Brad McKenzie Winter Championship Trial) 400 yards, Dirt, Quarter Horse, $10K, 7 horses:

In the final race of the night, it is the second of the 2023 BMWC Trials. The long shot of this race is #6 Letty Cartel at 30-1. While the favorite of this race is #3 Apollitical Pence at 1-5. 

20 MTP: Apolitical Pence opens up as a 1-9 favorite.
15 MTP: #6 Letty Cartel is a 57-1 long shot.
10 MTP: #5 Famous Cartel Jess & LC are at 45-1.
5 MTP: LC is near her morning line of 30-1. She is at 35-1.
2 MTP: AP is the 1-9 favorite. While Both Cartels FCJ & LC are 30-1 co-long shots.

Post: #6 Letty Cartel opened the gate early. #1 is off to a good start. But AP has a lead.

Finish:
3-2-4-1

Apolitical Pence wins this trial at 1-9 odds. He will earn wagers $2.20. $1 Exacta (3-2) paying out $4.20. $1 Trifecta (3-2-4) paying out $7.50. $0.10 Superfecta (3-2-4-1) paying out $2.82. Late Pick 3 (1, 2, 3) paying out $37.00.


Final Thoughts:
How about Capo De Story. She pulls the upset at 13-1. She defeated the favorite Look Up in that 300 yard sprint. 

But no surprise in the trials. Empressum & Apolitical Pence won their trial races for the 2023 Brad McKenzie Winter Championship. Empressum had a scare from Scoop Dynasty as Empressum's nose was the difference in the first trial. Apolitical Pence had no problems winning his trial. 

They will face each other along with the likes of Dasha Dynasty & Scoop Dynasty in the BMWC, Next Month.
